Suzette McAvoy: Curatorial Services offers professional curatorial services to artists, galleries, private collectors and museums. Services range from organizing exhibitions for travel, writing on exhibitions and artwork, consulting on installing or purchasing works for private collections, serving as guest curator for museum exhibitions, assisting individual artists with marketing their work, and preparing catalogues for publication. Suzette McAvoy is the former Chief Curator, Farnsworth Art Museum with more than twenty years of experience as a museum curator. She has organized national traveling exhibitions of the work of Louise Nevelson, Alex Katz, Kenneth Noland, Lois Dodd, Karl Schrag and Alan Magee, among other artists. November 2006-November 2007 William A. Farnsworth Library and Art Museum, Rockland, ME Chief Curator - Responsible for overall supervision of Curatorial Department, including the development and management of the museum collection and exhibition program; worked closely with all staff and board members; extensive grant writing and administrative duties; frequent contact with contemporary artists, galleries and collectors. 1988-95, 2003-present University of Maine, Orono, ME Associate Professor of Museum Studies – Responsible for teaching three core courses, MSE 200 Introduction to Museum Studies, MSE 311 Exhibition Evaluation and MSE 310 Exhibition: Theory and Design at Orono campus and Hutchinson Center, Belfast. Fall and Spring 2002-2003 University of Rhode Island, Kingston, R.I. Director, URI Galleries - Oversaw all facets of the University’s three exhibition galleries and visiting artist series; supervised gallery interns and worked closely with Department of Art and Art History faculty. Johnson Museum of Art, Cornell University, Ithaca, NY Coordinator of Exhibitions - Managed all aspects of the museum’s in-house and touring exhibition program. August 1986 - August 1987 Assistant to Director - Assisted museum director with administration, assumed full responsibility for personnel, donor records and gift processing. June 1985 - July 1986 Asst. Coordinator of Education - Developed and conducted programs on the museum’s collections and exhibitions for school, college, adult and family groups. June 1984 - May 1985 Assistant Curator - Assisted the curator with all aspects of the museum¹s department of painting and sculpture. January 1983 - May 1984 National Museum of American History, Smithsonian Institution, Washington, D.C. Registration Assistant – Assisted in the Objects Processing Facility and with Accession and Loan Records Management. Fall 1980 – Spring 1981 OTHER PROFESSIONAL ACTIVITIES • Frequent lecturer on aspects of Maine art, numerous gallery talks and slide lectures to diverse audiences, 1989-present.
